History

Band logo

Yuguo started as Crystal in 1997 in Nanchang. Childhood friends guitarist Wan Mai 万劢, bass Xie Jun 谢俊, drummer Lu Wenjian 吕文坚 and Xie Hui quit their jobs to move to Shanghai in May 2006 and become full-time musicians.

September 2009, the band released their live recording 2009 Live in Shanghai (Flying Fruit) on Douban for free streaming. The live recording features a few bonuses such as tracks with guest vocals from Yuyintang founder (and Babel's producer) Zhang Haisheng, Ding Jia of Momo (who also plays guitar) and Bang Bang Tang's Xiao Bai (who plays the harmonica on her track too).[1]

On March 26th, 2010, they performed at the Yuyintang. According to Andy Best: As usual, very professional but wouldn't be out of place entertaining on a cruise ship. So to speak. Full of local pop fans who all sang along.[2]

Taken from JUEfestival.com:

Yuguo (“Flying Fruit”) is the musical project of childhood friends Xie Hui (vocals), Wan Mai (guitar), Xie Jun (bass) and Lu Wenjian (drums).

Formed in 1997, Yuguo relocated from their hometown of Nanchang to Shanghai in 2006. In 2007, Yuguo released their first official album, Paradise Lost. This was followed by Babel, in 2009, produced by Zhang Haisheng, the founder of Shanghai’s iconic live music venue Yuyintang.

Yuguo’s sound can best be described as soulful pop-rock. The band’s poetic lyrics and layered melodies inspire fervent devotion and uninhibited sing-alongs.

On July 22nd, 2011, they performed during the Tiger Beer Battle at the Yuyintang. According to Andy Best: (...) when Yuguo came on it was clear that they were the biggest draw and they played a decent set. The room was full up and the fans knew the words and chanted their names. For those who may be new to the scene, Yuguo came to Shanghai from Jiangxi to be a full time band and are one of those most professional acts around.[3]
