History

New Pants was formed in 1996 under the name 金属车间的形体师傅 and later signed its contract with Modern Sky Records in 1997 with which they renamed the band to New Pants.

Their first CD named New Pants is released on Modern Sky Records in 1998.

The magazines Audio and Video World (音像世界) and Pop Song (通俗歌曲) vote New Pants' first CD into their 1998 and 1999 Top Ten Hits.

In 1999, New Pants first CD is officially distributed in Hongkong and receives very positive media attention.

In January 2000, New Pants finish the recording of their second CD, after which they release two music videos and finally their second album Disco Girl is released simultaneously in whole Asia.

In August 2001, New Pants start their Guangdong University Tour.

In December 2002, New Pants third CD We are automatic is released.

Next to 4 other Chinese bands, New Pants were filmed for the documentary film Beijing Bubbles in 2005.

They released Equal Love as a two disc set in 2008. One disc contains the album's eleven audio tracks and the other is a DVD with five music videos for their tracks and a film called Equal Love by Peng Li.

In May 2009, Millionaire Peng is voted the no. 9 coolest rock star in Beijing by Timeout Beijing Magazine. With his one-side-longer-than-the-other haircut and consistently funky T-shirts (we liked both the Wedding Album one he wore to our group shoot and the New Pants tee he sported for his solo shoot), Millionaire Peng is the epitome of cool. Pang Kuan was voted the no. 5 coolest rock star. The New Pants keyboard player gets on our list for being so gloriously uncool that he is in fact very cool indeed. We’ve seen Pang strip down to latex leggings and do his breakdancing/comedy dance routine a few times, and it still shows few signs of gettingold.^[1] August 7th 2009, they performed during the InMusic Festival 2009 on the Zhangbei Grasslands on the Main Stage.

In the February 2010 issue of TimeOut Beijing, Shen Lihui named them as one of the top acts in 2010.^[2] On July 17th, 2010, they were scheduled to perform at the Qingyuan Niu Yu Zui Festival 2010, however ultimately did not participate.
